EU Invests 3.2 Billion Euro in 'Greener' Future

Industry & research announces new calls for proposals stimulating the recovery of the automobile, construction and manufacturing technologies sectors. Eight hundred representatives from Europe's industry and research sectors got together, on 13 July, to announce the first set of calls for proposals that will be officially launched on 30 July in the three sectors identified by the European Commission to stimulate recovery: the automobile, construction and manufacturing technologies sectors. Each of these sectors already forms part of a European public private partnership. A budget of €268 million has been allocated for the first cycle of calls for proposals. The three planned partnerships are part of the European economy recovery plan endorsed by the European Council, in December 2008, aiming to promote the convergence of public interest and industry commitment for research. 'Factories of the future' (€1.2 billion between 2010 and 2013): An initiative to help EU manufacturers, especially small to medium-sized businesses, adapt to global competitive pressures by increasing their knowledge and use of the technologies of the future. 'Energy-efficient buildings' (€1 billion): An initiative to promote 'green' technologies and development of energy-efficient systems and materials in European buildings. 'Green cars' (€1 billion): An initiative focusing on the development of renewable and non-polluting energy sources, safety and traffic fluidity in the automobile sector. 'Greening' is necessary to achieve EU and world targets for emissions reductions. Source: http://www.central2013.eu/nc/top-menu/home.html
